Tobacco snus: keep it cool

Snus is moist tobacco and, unlike most tobacco products, perishable. Cold slows down drying and the loss of flavour, which is why shops in Sweden sell it from a fridge. Keep your supply in the fridge and take out the can you are using. At room temperature an open can stays good for a few days; in a warm car or a trouser pocket in summer it dries out much faster.

Freezing snus

Unopened cans can go into the freezer if you want to keep them well beyond their best-before date. Let them thaw slowly in the fridge, not on the counter, so no condensation forms in the can – and don't freeze them a second time.

Nicotine pouches: dry and closed

Nicotine pouches contain no tobacco and much less moisture, so they don't need to be chilled. Store them closed, at room temperature and away from sun, heat and humidity. A fridge doesn't harm them, but it isn't necessary.

How to tell that snus has gone bad

Every can carries a best-before date. After it, snus isn't automatically spoiled, but it slowly loses moisture and flavour.

Questions

Does snus have to be kept in the fridge?

Tobacco snus is a moist, perishable product and stays fresh longest in the fridge; in Sweden shops keep it chilled. A can you are using can stay at room temperature for a few days.

Can you freeze snus?

Unopened cans of tobacco snus can be frozen to keep them for longer. Thaw them slowly in the fridge and don't freeze them again.

Do nicotine pouches need to be refrigerated?

No. Nicotine pouches are drier and are stored at room temperature – closed, dry and out of direct sunlight and heat.

Does snus expire?

Cans carry a best-before date. After it, snus slowly dries out and loses flavour, which you notice as hard, crumbly pouches and a weaker taste.
